The most well known gold bullion coin is the South African Krugerrand. It is the most widely owned gold bullion coin in the world, with over 46 million ounces currently in circulation. The coin became so popular that in 1980, it accounted for 90% of the gold bullion coin market.
The coin gets its name from Paul Kruger, the face of the Boer resistance against the British during the Second Boer War.
The obverse of the Krugerrand features a depiction of the aforementioned Paul Kruger. Kruger was also a four-term president of the old South African Republic. The obverse also bears the words ‘South Africa’.
On the reverse of the Krugerrand you will find a depiction of the spinkbox, one of the national symbols of South Africa. As well as this there will be the mint date and weight of the gold. The name ‘South Afrika’ and the gold content are inscribed in both Afrikaans and English on the coin.
